Kansas Insurance Commissioner Sandy Praeger has approved the sale of Coventry Health Care of Kansas, Inc. to Aetna Inc. The action follows a public forum and a formal hearing conducted by the Kansas Insurance Department Nov. 5 in Topeka.

Six Kansas college students are recipients of scholarships totaling $1,000 each for spring semester 2013 financial aid from the Kansas Insurance Department’s Monumental Life Settlement African-American Scholarship program.

Insurance Department to conduct public hearing on proposed sale of Coventry Health Care to Aetna

Sandy Praeger, Commissioner of Insurance, will preside over a public hearing Monday, Nov. 5, concerning the proposed acquisition of Coventry Health Care of Kansas, Inc. by Aetna, Inc.

Aetna, Inc., a national company, announced Aug. 20 its agreement to purchase Coventry Health Care, Inc., also a national company, for $7.3 billion. Coventry Health Care of Kansas, Inc., a subsidiary of the Coventry national corporation, is regulated by the Kansas Insurance Department (KID).

New mobile app takes guesswork, risk out of exchanging accident information

Many Americans don’t know what steps to take or basic information to share — or not share — after an auto accident. They may even put their identities and safety at risk by sharing too much personal information, according to a recent survey by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC).  The new WreckCheck mobile application from the NAIC can help eliminate that risk.

Insurance Commissioner Sandy Praeger makes Firefighters Relief Fund distribution

Kansas Insurance Commissioner Sandy Praeger is currently making the annual funds distribution to state and local firefighter relief organizations. More than $10.4 million will be distributed among 578 local Firefighters Relief Associations (FRAs) across the state. That is nearly $550,000 more than the 2011 total.

More than $560,000 in workers compensation insurance settlement money paid recently to the Kansas Insurance Department will be deposited into the state’s general fund, Sandy Praeger, Commissioner of Insurance, announced today.

Monumental Life Settlement Scholarship recipients announced

Five Kansas college students are recipients of $1,000 each for fall semester 2012 financial aid from the Kansas Insurance Department’s Monumental Life Settlement African-American Scholarship program. The students are Apryl Tillman, a senior at the University of Kansas; Kameron Neal, a junior at Emporia State University; Oreoluwa Alebiosu, a junior at Kansas State University; Daniel Jones, a junior at the University of Kansas; and Shamika Rolle, a sophomore at Emporia State University.

Nearly $326,000 in insurance settlement money paid to the Kansas Insurance Department will be deposited into the state’s general fund, Sandy Praeger, Commissioner of Insurance, announced today.

Insurance Dept. investigator receives meritorious service award

Randy Adair, chief investigator for the Kansas Insurance Department’s Anti-Fraud Division, and a retired deputy chief of police for Topeka, is the recipient of the 2012 Clarence M. Kelley Meritorious Service Award from the Kansas/Western Missouri Chapter of the FBI National Academy Associates.

Commissioner urges companies to work with consumers on disaster claims

Sandy Praeger, Commissioner of Insurance, is urging Kansas insurance consumers who have had to leave their homes because of tornado and storm damage to contact their insurance companies and agents to let them know their situation.

Insurance Department employees donate $1,402 to Harveyville

Sandy Praeger, Commissioner of Insurance, and employees of the Kansas Insurance Department (KID) contributed $1,402 to help with relief efforts in Harveyville, which was hit by a Feb. 28 tornado which affected 60 percent of the Kansas town.

Insurance department probe leads to former agent's conviction

A former Pittsburg (Kan.) insurance agent will have to pay back more than $137,000 to victims of forgery and theft following a Kansas Insurance Department (KID)-led investigation involving non-payment of clients’ insurance premiums to companies.

Sandy Praeger, Commissioner of Insurance, is reissuing a 1991 Kansas Insurance Department (KID) bulletin to remind life and accident/health insurance companies and agents about their need to comply with advertising regulations, even if they don’t directly produce their marketing materials.
