Insurance Commissioner Sandy Praeger has announced that Kansas will be the recipient of a portion of a $400,000 settlement by the Ohio-based insurance company, Western & Southern Life Insurance Company (WSLIC). Kansas is participating in a multi-state investigation of the race-based underwriting practices of the Company.

Kansas Insurance Commissioner Sandy Praeger is encouraged by the recent announcement of a new policy being implemented by the American Beverage Association to make more nutritious and lower-calorie beverages available in school vending machines. The Kansas Beverage Association also supports the new policy. School districts and bottlers across the country are being encouraged to implement this policy as soon as possible.

Kansas Insurance Commissioner Sandy Praeger is the newly elected Vice-President of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC). By a unanimous vote, her peers elected her during the NAIC Winter National Meeting held in Chicago December 4-6.

Insurance Commissioner Sandy Praeger has announced that consumers can protect themselves from flooded Gulf-region vehicles and boats with unsafe electrical systems by checking ID numbers listed on a free database from the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB). Consumers will be able to search the NICB database for vehicles and watercraft specifically affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

Insurance Commissioner Sandy Praeger has deployed two members of the Kansas Insurance Department to assist at the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) Call Center. The Call Center, located in the NAIC headquarters in Kansas City, MO, has been established to assist with the high volume of property insurance calls being fielded as a result of Hurricane Katrina.

"The most obvious suggestion is to pay attention to driving conditions and make any necessary safety adjustments," said Commissioner Praeger. Still, accidents do happen no matter how much caution is exercised. Kansans are encouraged to keep a checklist in their car's glove compartment to help with filing insurance claims.
